Search Engine Optimization
If your website shows up on the first page of results for your keywords, you will get a constant flow of customers who are looking for exactly what you have to offer. Aside from the increased traffic and sales, owning the organic search listings builds your reputation as a leader in your industry.

PPC Search Marketing
Pay per click search advertising offers a lot more targeting control than organic search. Sure, you have to pay for every click, but you’re only paying for the clicks you want. Plus you can limit your campaign to specific geographic regions or time of day. Have a professional set up and manage your campaign and you’ll see a huge difference in results. Make sure you’re using the right match types, including applicable negative matches to weed out the junk.

PPC Contextual Advertising
Many people assume that content network ads don’t perform as well as search. This is true some of the time, but not always. Average cost per click is often lower with contextual ads, so you can achieve comparable results to your search ads even if the conversion rate is lower. However, just because you can display your search ads in the content network doesn’t mean you should. Since people seeing these ads didn’t necessarily search on your keywords, you need to use an ad that matches their frame of mind.

Affiliate Marketing
Get 1000’s of websites to promote your wares and only pay for completed sales. That’s the allure of affiliate marketing. It’s a lot harder than it sounds to get it right, but if you are generous with your payouts and treat your affiliates right, this channel can make a huge impact to your company’s sales numbers.

Email Marketing
Build a list of customers and prospects and send them valuable information, and good offers. Customize your offers to their specific needs and let them know how you can help them. This is a good time to maximize your house list and nurture your relationships with existing customers. They say it costs 10 times more to acquire a new customer than to sell to an existing customer, so it’s a no brainer.

Joint Ventures
It’s smart to use your own customer list to its fullest, and it’s also smart to leverage the loyal customer base of partner companies. Pay your partner a commission for sales they generate, or cross-promote their products to your customer list.

Direct Mail
Response rates for direct mail campaigns are way down, and non-targeted campaigns are usually a waste, but if you target the right list with the right message and the right offer, DM can be golden. If all your competitors are sending email, a personalized letter in the mail will stand out.

Customize your marketing plan to meet your objectives. Test EVERYTHING. Ditch the stuff that doesn’t work and increase spending on the stuff that works. Don’t let the stupid recession get in the way or reaching your success!

Marketers talk and they always have. In the past, when they shared tricks, accomplishments, and information, it was done on a face to face basis. Whether through an IM conversation, emails, or over a drink or two, the sharing was always controlled to a certain extent.

Sure even in those controlled environments, information can accidentally get out. For example, when Rand Fishkin, a well know search marketing expert, overheard Matt Cutts talking with some people at SES San Jose about the sandbox, he blogged immediately about
it and caused quite a stir for publically releasing information that was from a private conversation. Luckily, social media was not as evolved as it is now, so the information and visibility of the blunder was minimal, thus quickly forgiven and forgotten.

Revealing too much information is not is not a new issue that is related only to social media. Even as far back as many of you might remember, there was always some marketer giving away just a little too much information. One example was when Bob Massa, SearchKing, announced that he was selling PageRank through his PR Ad Network. This prompted a trend of buying links for PageRank and resulted in Google launching a war against paid links.

Had Bob only shut the f**k up, he could have made a lot of money, but instead he lost the PR on his sites and it took four years to get it back.

So why is that people feel the need to talk about their accomplishments and the tricks they have figured out? There are three main reasons why people just cannot shut the f**k up:

The Good Guys are really good hearted marketers. When they discover a trick that works, they want to share it with their peers and friends.

We all love the good guys. They already know when to shut up and when to speak, and they are more likely to spend an evening sharing their tips and tricks face to face. It is the braggers and the ambitious people that you have to watch out for.

The Braggers lack confidence or desire attention. These marketers feel the need to brag about their accomplishments to fit in and make them feel accepted.

Normally I would say that the braggers are harmless, since they tend to have small followings and less of a reputation. However, every so often a somewhat visible and reputable marketer brags about something that they probably shouldn’t have.

Take Matt Inman, former SEOmozzer, who used widgets and quizzes to get inbound links with the anchor text “Free Online Dating” and “Online Dating” to his site Mingle2. The accomplishment earned his site the number 1 spot in Google for the top dating keywords above top dating sites like eHarmony.

Matt, obviously proud of his accomplishment, went on to explain in great detail exactly how he did it during SES San Jose in 2007. Something he would probably later wish he had just shut the f**k up about.

Mingle2 was later sold to JustSayHi, a competing website, due to Matt’s success. Next Internet, the parent company of JustSayHi, later asked
Matt to swap out some of the quiz and widget links with keywords like “Cash Advance” and point to some of their lead-gen websites.

It was a swap that did not go unnoticed. As a result widget links became an issue that Google felt had to be addressed immediately.

The fallout cost Matt all of his properties’ rankings, which was the success of his technique to begin with, but that was not all. It also
caused many big companies to lose millions of dollars when Google put an eye on widgets and the links they contained.

The Ambitious marketers want to increase their reputation and respect within their industry, at any cost.

The Ambitious are the people who scare me the most. They will gladly give away any tricks or tips they can so that they are seen as a leader in the industry. They often do not care about the industry or the people who work around them.

The recent Lyndoman situation is a perfect example. Lyndoman is a social media marketer who was well respected among the top social media marketers. He created a social media linkbait for a client that went to the front page of Digg and was even
mentioned on a television news broadcast.

Needless to say, the linkbait was a huge success. Lyndoman probably would have gone on to continue to do more linkbaits for the client, if he had only learned to shut the f**k up.

Lyndoman decided to brag about the campaign and announced to everyone that the article was actually false. “Absolutely-completely-utterly a fabrication, a tissue of lies weaved in a fog of deceit. Or what most people would call satire.” In addition to admitting the content was false, he also put his client out in the open to be judged on his behalf. An action that later drew the attention of Matt Cutts from Google, who commented, “

This resulted in multiple problems for Lyndoman and the social media marketing industry.

Although we have seen a major change in the way corporations have begun to embrace social media, there are many who are still concerned about losing control of their image, message, and reputation. The control they are accustomed to with traditional media doesn’t exist online. As a result,
corporations are afraid that one of the extreme or edgy content pieces marketers convince them to do. They are concerned it will hurt their reputation and business.

Unfortunately, this incident could hurt the entire industry by making clients wary of participating in social media. It will also impact the way social communities perceive content submitted by marketers.

Lyndoman admitted later, after losing the client and gaining a lot of negative media exposure, that the short lived fame from exposing the success of his campaign was not worth it. He even decided to remove the original post from his site saying, “At the end of the day it did more harm than good discussing publicly such effective tactics.”

As social media and online marketing continues to grow, we will see an even stronger desire for marketers to expose tricks and techniques in exchange for potential fame and recognition. In an effort to eliminate the chance for this to occur, an increasing number of top internet marketers have stopped talking about their secrets completely. The days of buying someone a beer and having them share their tricks are being replaced by smaller behind the scenes groups. They are increasingly becoming very cautious with who they allow in their circle of trust.

Even the newly crowned “rockstars” can still make mistakes, especially when they don’t realize the power of their voice. A great example is Jeremy “Shoemoney” Schoemaker. Shortly after becoming widely known online for affiliate marketing, he published a picture of a very large adsense check sent to him by Google.

Through blog posts and his radio show Net Income, Jeremy explained how he was able to make large amounts of money from the ringtone industry. This caused a lot of people to get into the ringtone market and drove up the keyword costs in PPC engines. Something he admits probably cost him a lot of money.

I have a lot of respect for each of the people referenced in this article. They are all experienced internet marketers, who at one point or another made a mistake. I use their examples only because they had a large impact on the internet marketing industry as a whole.

Everyone brags and everyone shares secrets, but you need to pick and choose the right time and place to do so. If you really want to gain the respect and reputation in the industry and your peers, save the bragging and ambition for the face to face encounters.

When it comes to disclosing your techniques and tricks, just shut the f**k up already!

If you are currently running a website, whether it be for an organized charity, business, or just your own, personal blog, you’re probably asking yourself “Now how can I get more traffic to my website?” Don’t worry, because every other web master out there is asking the very same thing and I come bearing tips!

The following are 7 tips that I use myself and know work to increase the exposure of your website.

Tip #1: Pinging Services
Even some experienced web masters are unaware of just how important pinging services can be. A ping is a reminder to all of your readers that you have just updated your website. Services that include pinging services are Yahoo’s Blo.gs, Weblogs, Google Blog Search, and ZingFast. When your readers see that you have recently updated your website, they will definitely be heading on over to see what today’s topic is about.

Tip #2: Sign up for Technorati
Technorati is The King of website branding. It is an excellent website with a unique way of ranking your website. When you sign up for Technorati, the first thing you need to do is claim your blog. By doing so, no one else will be able to scam the system and sign themselves up under your website’s name. Having your website claimed on Technorati helps increase traffic due to the amount of people using it. It can also be used as a social networking site; it’s a great place to find other websites that may be of interest to you and of course, a way for others to find your website!

Tip #3: FeedBurner RSS Feeds
FeedBurner is an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) service. It lets people subscribe to your website’s feed so every time you update, your website will come up as updated and they will be sure to check it out. They also offer another great service, and that allows your readers to sign up for your feed via email, so every time you update they will receive a notification in their inbox.

Tip #4: del.icio.us
del.icio.us is perhaps the largest social bookmarking website at the moment. When you sign up for del.icio.us, you can now keep all of your bookmarks in one place online so no matter what happens to your computer, you are always able to access your favorite websites on any computer. A great deal of web masters use del.icio.us as a form of marketing their website. You can add excerpts from your blog to the website and there are also ways to meet other people and if they go to your profile, they are greeted with a link and excerpts from your blog.

There are several other social bookmarking websites, however, del.icio.us is the most widely-utilized.

Tip #5: Post Comments on Other Websites and Blogs

Lets face it, pretty much everyone, if they don’t run a business or personal website, they have a blog on one of many blogging platforms, such as Blogger, LiveJournal, etc. By leaving comments on other blogs and websites, you are sure to get your website more exposure and also, you may just get a comment back from the web master of that website and even their readers! However, you must remember that it is not wise to blindly visit websites and leave comments that are irrelevant to what they are writing about, so choose wisely what websites you would like to comment on. While reading, think to yourself “Does what they have to say interest me?” “Do I have a similar story that I can share?” And because in hindsight you are leaving comments on other websites for the reason that yes, you would like more traffic to your website, think “Would my website or blog interest them?”

Tip #6: Ask Owners of Other Websites to Post a Link to Yours

Link exchanges are highly effective for getting more traffic to your website. Start by finding wesbites that have similar interests to yours and if they seem to get a lot of comments, have a low Alexa rank, or a high PR, why not contact them and ask for a link exchange? As incentive to get them to put a link to your website up, return the favor. Remember, it doesn’t pay to be too picky with who you link on your website. In addition, you can leave a comment on someone’s website (that has something to do with their topic) and they may check your website out and see that you have a link to their site up and return the favor. Of course, it never hurts to contact them in some way and ask for an exchange or even just inform them that you put a link to their website up because mos of the time, they will return the favor.

Tip #7: Use Keywords

Using keywords on your website helps mostly your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and determines how many search engine spiders notice your website.

Search engine spiders are programs from search engines that automatically browse websites and report back their findings to the search engine database. When it does this, your website is added to that search engine. For example, if you had an article or post about going to the vet with your dog, it would be wise to list dog, vet, pets, pet care, etc. as keywords to that post and then when spiders come to your website and see your keywords, it is added to the database so if someone was searching for pet care, your website would come up and ultimately, it will bring more traffic.

I hope these 7 tips have helped you and I will be back with more fun, easy, and interesting posts for everyone!

Did you know that Ms. Jessica Alba wears Bapes aka as Bathing Apes
